Pet
mice or fancy mice are the common domestic mice that are admired as pet
creatures. A group of pet mice moving in the room makes the scene
interesting and they are not very difficult to handle. With proper
training, they learn to come to you and take the food from your hand and
this should commence at a very young age for the mice. Pet mice are tiny
pets and are wonderful hobby that entertains you without much trouble in
managing them.
The
only flaw in this hobby is the life span of the pet mice, which is only
about 2 years on an average. They are social beings and like to be in
groups. They enjoy and play mostly during the evening and at night and
rarely active during daytime. You can have a fair number of them in a
spacious cage to have enough room for them. Ensure that you keep the
males separated from females and in different cages. This is important
to avoid fights between the males for mates and also there will be
immediate progression of numbers if both the sexes are kept in the same
cage. Females generally are timid and move and mingle nicely with each
other.
You
should select pet mice that are healthy, energetic, and clean with
pinkish skin on the part of ear and tail. None of them should be having
any sign of discharge from nose, mouth or anal area and should have
normal breathing. Examine the cage which the pet mice used prior to the
purchase. It indicates the standard of cleanliness. Check for males and
females at the pet store which the reputed stores keep separated. Since
the mice start giving birth from the age of 6 to 8 weeks, be sure that
you are not purchasing pregnant ones. You must also know to
differentiate between a male and a female mouse.
Choose
the size of the cage depending on the number of pet mice that you have.
The store owner can give you reliable advice on the size of the cage,
which is specially created for pet mice. You will get varieties of cages
in the store. They are decorated with several fittings at different
levels for the mice to play. With this type of cage, you will be able to
maintain cleanliness also. Many prefer the wire cages for the extra
playing scope of the mice offered there and the mice can use the side
netting for climbing along with other equipment fitted there.
Placing the cage in your house is an important factor. It should be kept
away from other pets in the house and near better human presence and
under diffused sunlight. The floors of the cage should have nice bedding
with the aspen or any other wood shavings or paper
The pet
mice are involved in running and playing abundantly. Throw wooden
wheels, rubber tubes, blocks of wood, small boxes, cotton papers and
anything for their play and movement. They climb and run and play
throughout the time. You sit and enjoy them do fantastic things which
you will love to witness. Place porcelain or ceramic bowl for food and a
water bottle specially made for them like the gravity type so that they
get their ration in time.
Cleaning is very vital for the pet mice. There are chances that you find
their feces all around the house. So being vigilant and cleaning the
house as regular intervals may become a bit tiring at times. Provide
them a grain and seed combination diet, which they love to eat. You can
also give them commercially advertised diet if you desire so. Look after
the health of your pet mice and keep them safe and sound for your own
enjoyment.
